Indonesia Yogyakarta Earthquake 2006

Another misfortune befell Indonesia in the early morning of 27 May 2006. At 5:53 am local time, the province of Yogyakarta was struck by an earthquake. Reports indicated that the earthquake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was approximately 37.2 km south of Yogyakarta at a depth of 33 kilometres. The most affected districts were Bantul and Kulonprogo to the south of Yogyakarta. Indonesia was one of the countries severely affected by the 2004 earthquake and tsunami. More than 5,700 people were killed.

Immediately following the earthquake, international organizations and NGOs came together to determine appropriate ways to support the efforts of the Government of Indonesia in providing assistance to the victims.  OCHA also released a $100,000 emergency cash grant from its reserve fund and an additional $50,000 cash grant from Norwegian funds pre-positioned with OCHA. Following established procedures in the event of natural disasters, a five-member United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team was dispatched. The United Nations agencies and their non-governmental partners supported the Government in providing assistance to an estimated 1.5 million rendered homeless by the disaster. On 2 June 2006, the United Nations launched a $103 million Earthquake Response Plan (ERP) to support the urgent needs of over 200,000 people severely affected by the earthquake.

The death toll continues to climb and is estimated to range from 5,150 to 5,846, while injuries range from 22,731 to 33,351.
