5 October 2011 : Some $105,930 has been made available from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in response to the refugee crisis in Benin.  As of August 2011, Benin has received more than 560 refugees, the majority of whom seek to flee violence in Cote d’Ivoire. The numbers of arrivals are expected to reach 1,000 by December 2011. Most of these refugees are women and children.

A recent multi-sector needs assessment conducted in Benin highlighted that one of the most pressing needs is food and lack of sanitation.   CERF funding will ensure that refugees have access to multi-sectoral assistance, under the leadership and coordination of UNHCR. Material assistance will include water, food, shelter, protection, health and education.
