  • Cape Verde ranks 102 out of 177 countries on the Human Development Index 2007/2008.

  • Dengue fever started to spread significantly in early November.  On the island of Santiago (population 240,000), the number of patients exceeded the capacity of the hospitals so that tents had to be put up to take care of the unprecedented crowds.

  • As of 13 November, 14,446 cases of dengue fever had been recorded, including six deaths, and 118 cases of hemorrhagic fever, the most dangerous strain of the disease.

25 November 2009: To respond a massive outbreak of dengue fever in Cape Verde, CERF allocated $474,000.

Cape Verde is experiencing their first dengue type 3 outbreak in addition to the highest number of laboratory confirmed cases of A H1N1 in West Africa.  The situation requires close monitoring for potential increasing co-infection. As Cape Verde is a crossroad between Europe, Africa, and Latin America, effort to contain an international geographical spread is imperative.

Responding to the situation, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will use $314,000 and $160,000, respectively, to provide health-related assistance to 354,000 people at risk in affected islands.
