  • Approximately 80 percent of the population lives on less than US$2 per day with 16 percent existing in extreme poverty on less than $1 per day.
  • There are only 12 doctors for every 100,000 people in Guinea-Bissau, and only 34.7 percent of births are assisted by skilled attendants. The maternal mortality rate rose in 2003 from 910 to 1,100 deaths for every 100,000 live births.
  • Around 54 percent of children aged 5-14 are involved in child labour and that there are increasing numbers of street children.
