3 November 2008: The Indian state of Orissa has experienced annual floods much more severe than those in previous years, threatening livelihoods and damage to property. The floods this year have been very severe due to heavy rains following deep depression. Heavy rain, water released from the Hirakud Dam and several river embankment breaches have worsened the flooding situation affecting 19 out of 30 districts in the state.

The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) is providing dignity kits to prove hygiene, health, mobility and access, protection, and basic dignity for women in relief camps. Over 24,000 women and adolescent girls are expected to benefit.

18 September 2008: The annual rainfall in India during the months of July to September leads to high levels of water in rivers. This year, massive floods in many parts of north Bihar were due to a major breach in the eastern embankment of the Kosi River in Kusaha on 18 August. The breach inundated hundreds of villages in the northern Bihar districts of Supaul, Araria, Madehpura and Purnea.

United Nations Childrens' Fund (UNICEF) is responding by operating Health activities to contain diseases and supplement immunisations for measles and vitamin A, Nutrition activities to address severe acute malnutrition in children.  UNICEF is also ensuring water quality and providing temporary shelter while opening temporary Learning spaces in shelter camps.

United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) is supplying Dignity Kits and psychosocial counselling for flood affected women and adolescent girls in Bihar.
