19 March 2009: In Iraq, the total number of reported measles cases between January 2008 and January 2009 reached 10,306 and is continuing to spread among the susceptible population. Although immunization is a priority program for the Ministry of Health, the deterioration in the security situation has severely affected distribution of vaccine, supervisory and training activities and access for children and women to immunization institutions. This has lead to a significant decrease in the percentage of infants protected against measles.
In response, CERF has allocated funds for the World Health Organization (WHO) to conduct an immunization campaign for over 850,000 children to prevent the spread of the measles outbreak.
