CERF allocates close to $ 1.3 million to humanitarian assistance in Namibia

31 March 2009: Since the beginning of 2009, severe flooding has overtaken the north-central and north-eastern regions of Namibia. To date, 92 people have lost their lives in the floods and up to 350,000 people may have been affected. Currently, an estimated total of 13,000 people are displaced, including 9,180 who are currently residing in temporary relocation camps. The flooding has damaged public infrastructure, thereby significantly reducing access of the affected population to health facilities, schools and market places.
CERF has allocated some $1.3 million to response to the flooding. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will provide health assistance together with water and sanitation supplies for 344,000 people. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will strengthen national health emergency response for displaced and vulnerable populations. The World Health Organization (WHO) will work to reduce avoidable illnesses and deaths through the prevention of communicable disease outbreaks.
UN Habitat will support the provision of emergency shelter for displaced persons and help reinforce existing shelter facilities. The World Food Programme (WFP) will assist in the implementation of a food distribution scheme for an estimated 63 percent of flood victims.
