7 December 2009: Swaziland continues to suffer from a combination of recurrent drought attributed to climate change, sluggish economic growth, increasing levels of poverty and declining agricultural production. The Swaziland Vulnerability Assessment Committee (Swazi VAC 2009) indicated that a number of households will continue to experience food shortages, especially for those poor rural-based households in the Lowveld and Lubombo plateau who depend on rain-fed agriculture.
Responding to the situation, CERF has allocated $1.3 million to the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide food assistance to approximately 81,500 people in Swaziland. [Last Update: 15 December 2009]
