  • Togo ranks 157 out of 177 countries in the Human Development Report 2007/2008.
  • There are only four doctors for every 100,000 people and public spending on health has dropped from 12.3 percent in 1999 to 5.7 percent in 2002. Government per capita health expenditure is only US$4.
  • Political violence in April 2005 forced 40,000 Togolese to flee into Benin and Ghana in fear of persecution.  Close to 25,000 went to Benin, where 11,600 were housed at two camps. Another 15,000 crossed over into Ghana's Volta region, where the majority were given shelter by host families.

Several factors are undermining food security and nutrition, including low food production and rising poverty, limited diversity of staple food and poor access to food, especially during the lean season. Recent flooding and high food prices have made matters worse. A World Food Populations (WFP) food assessment identified 65,000 people whose very lives are at risk in three regions. As part of WFP’s ongoing humanitarian operation in the country, CERF has provided $1.1 million in funding to feed these people.
