CERF allocates over $1.3 million for immediate health assistance to the Gazan population

23 March 2009:  The donation of some 4500 tons of medical supplies entering through Rafah overwhelmed the storage and delivery systems. There was an urgent need to support the warehouse management to ensure a reliable delivery system of needed drugs and consumables to district and health facility level. Currently, because all available space (the warehouse capacity increased from 2 to 35) was taken up, life-saving drugs did not reach operations due to the complete disorganization and overflow of the capacity. To re-establish functionality as rapidly as possible, the World Health Organization (WHO) used over $1.3 million from CERF funds to rent additional space as delivery point for essential, life saving drugs, based on the essential drug list of the Ministry of Health.

Apart from the drug distribution system, WHO also used CERF funds to undertake much-needed health programmes to deal with trauma, chronic diseases, diarrhea outbreaks, and long-term mental health problems to reduce excess mortality and morbidity within the Gazan population.

5 February 2009: Continued conflict is resulting in a serious humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.  The situation is adding an additional logistics challenge for the humanitarian community to deliver humanitarian assistance into the Gaza strip.

To meet needs, CERF is providing $1 million to the World Food Programme (WFP) to facilitate the consolidation, prioritization and dispatch of humanitarian relief items into Gaza by setting up staging areas in Israel, the West Bank and Egypt. The operation will facilitate the uninterrupted supply of life saving relief items to the most affected populations in Gaza.

14 January 2009: Even before the commencement of military operations on 27 December, Gazans were suffering from shortages of all kinds, because of Israeli restrictions on the entry of humanitarian and other goods.  But the vulnerability of the population has risen dramatically due to the latest violence, and they have no way of fleeing.

CERF has allocated $7 million to relief agencies working in Gaza.  The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will seek to provide safe drinking water to as many as 200,000 people.  The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) will provide fuel for generators that power water pumping stations, hospitals and other municipal services in Gaza.  The World Food Programme (WFP) will provide ready-made meals to 16,000 internally displaced persons staying in UNRWA shelters.
