INSARAG - Structure
The INSARAG Steering Committee
INSARAG policy is determined by its Steering Group. The Steering Group meets annually to review achievements and to identify areas to be improved. It is composed of representatives from each INSARAG Regional Group (Africa/Europe, Asia/Pacific, and the Americas) and the INSARAG Secretariat (FCSS in OCHA-Geneva).
INSARAG Regional Groups
To facilitate worldwide participation, INSARAG is organized in three Regional Groups: Africa/Europe, Asia/Pacific and the Americas. The Regional Groups meet annually to exchange information and experience acquired in previous relief operations, plan SAR training, discuss methodology for cooperation among SAR teams and to make recommendations to the Steering Group for further improvement of international cooperation and coordination in disaster response.
Annual INSARAG Meeting of International Search and Rescue Team Leaders
Every year, INSARAG organizes a meeting for international urban search and rescue team leaders in order to exchange knowledge on operational issues related to international response operations.
INSARAG Working Groups
INSARAG creates regional and international Working Groups on an "as required" basis to develop solutions to problems that were identified in regional meetings. The Working Groups discontinue after delivering requested result. All member countries and organizations are encouraged to participate in INSARAG Working Groups.
INSARAG Secretariat
The Field Coordination Support Section (FCSS) within the Emergency Services Branch (ESB) in the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) functions as the INSARAG Secretariat.
