Regional Context

The Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia feature a range of humanitarian concerns. There are a number of complex, protracted conflict situations in the region, including Iraq,  Afghanistan) and more than 9.3 million refugees primarily from the occupied Palestinian territory, Iraq, Afghanistan and Western Sahara.

Countries in the region are also prone to natural and man-made disasters, including earthquakes, floods, landslides, cyclones industrial accidents and oil spills Central Asia is one of the most seismically active areas in the world, and floods, landslides, extreme cold and drought regularly cause vast economic and environmental damage. One of the key aims of the OCHA's Regional Office is to improve overall disaster preparedness and response through strengthening our partnerships with humanitarian actors in the region. Regional Humanitarian Funding Update | Fourth Quarter 2009

Humanitarian requirements in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia (MENACA) » »region in 2009 were funded at 67.7 percent, with US$122 million in the pipeline. The Syria Drought Response Plan 2009 is by far the least funded among the MENACA appeals with only 13.9 percent of the requirements met.

UN Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs concludes mission to Egypt

Catherine Bragg, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, has concluded the first leg of her four-day Middle East mission to Egypt and Syria.

6.6 Million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and eight million refugees hosted by countries in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia (MENACA) region. Population were uprooted as a result of political instability and violence.

Yemen-Humanitarian Update - Issue #3

The security situation in Sa’ada Governorate remains unstable, with reports of heavy airstrikes by Yemeni and Saudi forces. On 13 December, airstrikes were reported in Razeh district of Sa'ada Governorate, in the border region between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

 Where we work

 
ROMENACA provides humanitarian coordination support to 27 countries and territories. It is based in Dubai, with oversight for the office of the Regional Disaster Response Advisor for Central Asia and the Regional Pandemic Influenza Contingency hub for the Middle East and North Africa (based in Cairo). In addition to these offices, OCHA has field presences in oPt, Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan.
