CERF allocates US$ 3.5 million for emergency assistance to displaced Iraqi refugees in Jordan

16 May 2008: Countries in the region continue to sustain the influx of Iraqi refugees, in particular, Syria, Jordan, as well as Lebanon, Egypt, Turkey, Iran, the Gulf States among others. This refugee situation represents the largest urban population which the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has ever been called upon to respond to and poses an unprecedented load on the economies and social infrastructures of host countries. The agency estimates that there are two million Iraqis displaced to other countries in the region including 1.4 million in Syria and 450,000 to 500,000 in Jordan.
