On 8 October 2005, and earthquake of magnitude 7.6 on the Richter Scale struck South Asia. The epicentre was 95 Kilometers northeast of Islamabad, Pakistan, and parts of northern Pakistan, India and Afghanistan were totally devasted. More than 100 international organizations including the United Nations, international search and rescue teams, NGOs, the EU and Nato, responded to assist the government of Pakistan, which has borne the brunt of the devastation.
Hundreds of towns in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and North-West Frontier Province have been wiped out. This region is home to 4-5 million people and covers an area of 28,000 square kilometers. The final death toll was over 73,000, with some 69,000 injured. In total 3.5 million people were affected, and 600,000 houses were lost.
On 26 October 2005, the South Asia Flash Appeal was revised. The original appeal asked for about $311 million and the revised appeal requires almost $550 million. For list of commitments and contributions to date, please click here.
