An exhibition featuring photographs from projects funded under the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security (UNTFHS) and entitled "Human Security for All: Integrated responses to protect and empower people and communities" opened with a formal ceremony and reception on October 19, 2006 in the Main Visitor's Lobby of the UN General Assembly.
The ceremony was moderated by Mr. Shashi Tharoor, Under-Secretary-General for Public Information, with participation of the Members of the Advisory Board on Human Security, including Mrs. Sadako Ogata, Mr. Adebayo Adedeji, Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi, Mrs. Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, Ambassador Kenzo Oshima, Mr. Surin Pitsuwan, Mr. Iqbal Riza and Mr. Bradford Smith.
Since its establishment in 1999, the UNTFHS has supported 136 projects in a multitude of countries, fostering new approaches and pushing for a new way of thinking about a wide range of contemporary challenges – from hunger, poverty and failing schools to armed conflict, forced migration and human trafficking. This exhibit seeks to show the human face and the practical application of the human security concept, underlining the benefits it has brought to people and communities. On display in this photographic exhibit are a collection of photographs from projects funded in Afghanistan, Angola, Cambodia, Colombia, Liberia, Kosovo, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Viet Nam, Central America, and West Africa. The exhibition runs until December 3, 2006, and will be travelling to Geneva and other locations in 2007.
A related publication, prepared by the Human Security Unit, supplements the exhibit. It includes nine stories from the field that reflect the range of issues, regions and institutions supported by the UNTFHS in its efforts to further advance the human security of people and communities.
This exhibit and the booklet were made possible with the support of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations and the Ford Foundation, and with the collaboration of FAO, ILO, OCHA, UNDP, UNESCO, UN-HABITAT, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNIDO, UNIFEM, UNODC, UNOPS, WFP and WHO.
