Expanding Access to Quality Education

Objective
The three overarching objectives of this initiative are to:

  • Ensure access to quality pre-school and primary education through the improvement of school construction.
  • Enhance the quality of primary education through the introduction of new teaching methodologies.
  • Support the development of educational policies and reform plans through a full review and revision of the primary curriculum.

Beneficiaries
This project is to benefit children from age 6 to 14 throughout Kosovo, and will also be aimed at school teachers with efforts towards curriculum development and institutional capacity building for the education system, central and municipal authorities. This project also emphasizes local and participatory school management by providing support to parents and helping the establishment of Parent-Teacher Associations.

Activities

  • Reconstruction and rehabilitation of damaged schools, including water and sanitation upgrading and procurement of school and education material.
  • Support to curriculum reform with introduction of human rights and peace education, in combination with life skills courses and reformed teaching methodologies through training of teachers.
  • Build the capacity of municipal and central authorities in support of subject curricula development and integration of curricula across all communities in Kosovo.
Outputs (including distinctive aspects of the project)

  • 22 schools were constructed and 24 rehabilitated, combined with water and sanitation upgrading carried out at 92 schools. All constructed or reconstructed schools were provided new school furniture.
  • A child friendly school initiative was consolidated in 35 pilot schools.
  • Inclusive education of disabled children and children from minority communities was promoted and implemented.
  • 350 teachers, including Serb teachers, in all regions, followed training sessions organized with support from partner NGOs.
  • Multi-ethnical events with Kosovar Albanian & Kosovar Serbs schools were jointly organized all over Kosovo to promote peace, tolerance, and human rights education.
  • 60 schools organized Parent Teachers’ Councils.
  • The importance of education was promoted through extensive media campaigning.
  • Subject curricula was developed in collaboration with all communities, including Kosovar Serbs, and was prepared for implementation across Kosovo for preschool and grades 2, 7, and 11.
