Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN) Outreach Radio Project - Africa and Afghanistan

Objective
To enhance the capacity of displaced and refugee communities to voice and prioritize needs and to organize and manage their own solutions to problems; to enhance human security by promoting human rights and humanitarian principles; and to support the development of impartial and independent media.

Beneficiaries
Vulnerable and disaster affected communities, refugees, IDPs, victims of conflict, and other vulnerable groups particularly women and children.

Activities
  • Work with existing radio stations to provide relevant content, as well as training through co-production.
  • In Afghanistan, in addition to independent media, the project will also support the state radio network that the government is committed to promoting.
  • Training for journalists on reporting methods, management of content and programme production.
  • Distribution of wind-up radios in refugee, IDP and vulnerable communities, and material support to enhance capacities of local radio stations. 
Colloborating Partners
Community facilitators; community-based, privately owned, and state owned radio stations; UN agencies; NGOs; community based organizations; state and local governments.

Outputs (including distinctive aspects of the project)
 

  • In Afghanistan, 8 national community facilitators, 8 national radio producers, 8 local journalists trained. 12 co-productions and 12 audio programmes produced on issues and events supporting the peace process and human security, and topics selected through community involvement.
  • Wind-up radios distributed to IDPs, refugees and other vulnerable groups: 750 in Afghanistan in selected communities, 2000 in Angola, 1500 in Burundi...
  • In Sudan, 12 Sudanese radio journalists trained.
  • 250 programmes produced in Burundi, Tanzania, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda on key humanitarian issues.
  • Co-production training with 18 different partner stations in Cote d'Ivoire, and 16 local stations in Liberia.
