100 Schools Project: Securing Lifelines and Livelihoods for Children of Timor-Leste

Objective
This project aims at promoting the right of all East Timorese children to quality basic education. It also seeks to improve child survival and future job competencies, build the capacities of the education sector, and develop integrated models of Child Friendly Schools that benefit children, teachers and parents.
Beneficiaries
The principal beneficiaries of the “100 Schools Project” are primary school children and their teachers. Further beneficiaries are parents and communities, as well as policy makers within the Ministry of Education. The project covers all 13 administrative districts of Timor Leste.
Activities

In-service teacher training through training of trainers, teacher training and early childhood education training and material development.

Support to school-based management through development of parent-teacher associations and school councils, training of district education staff and provision of equipment to core schools.

Capacity building for the Ministry of Education through implementation of Education Management Information Systems, advocacy and communication.
Outputs (including distinctive aspects of the project)

Training of 125 facilitators on newly developed curricula.

Training of 160 teachers in five districts in the first stages of implementation.

Refresher training of 40 teachers each in 10 districts on early childhood education.

All districts are implementing the pre-school model developed by UNICEF.

Capacity-building workshops for school-based management held for 39 district facilitators, 26 district education officers and 13 superintendents.
- 269 Parent-teacher associations established.
- 32 schools have developed and implemented School-Improvement Plans.
