Reducing Post-Harvest Losses to Improve Food Security

Objective
This project aims to improve the food security status of rural communities through the reduction of post harvest losses and improved household storage capacities. This will be achieved through vocational and agricultural training as well as support to establishment of storage silos and emergency reserve stocks.
Beneficiaries
The beneficiaries of the project are rural households and farming communities through the introduction of simple post-harvest technology, storage technology, and establishment of local silos production capacity. Vulnerable populations are also targeted specifically through the establishment of an emergency reserve stock.
Activities

Consolidation of post-harvest loss reduction techniques through training on storage and processing techniques.

Training and capacity building for agricultural extension, combined with capacity building for local farmers and artisans.
- Establishment of seed store facilities.
Outputs (including distinctive aspects of the project)

20 rural blacksmith and apprentices trained on the building of silos in rural areas, combined with community-wide seminars on silo construction and maintenance, allowing for the construction of over 760 silos, with a total capacity of 420 tonnes.

20 sets of post-harvest equipment (including mills and threshers adapted to local production needs) distributed in selected rural communities, combined with training on operation and maintenance of equipment, attended by 800 farmers, local NGOs and government staff.

89 post-harvest training sessions held for approximately 3600 farmers in seven districts.

700 locally-produced viable and environmentally-friendly rice hull stove distributed to farmer communities.

167 community emergency seed stocks established in villages located in disaster-prone areas and/or hosting recently resettled returnees.
