Reintegration of Returning IDP and Refugee Women in Community Building

Implementing Agencies
UNIFEM, Ministry of Women's Affairs, local government agencies, national NGOs and women's groups.

Collaborating Partners
IOM, OCHA, UNHCR, UNICEF and International NGOs.

Objective
Further to UNHCR’s Programme for Repatriation and Reintegration (October 2001 – December 2002), the objective of the project is to support the reintegration and community-based involvement of returning and IDP refugee women, and strengthen their participation in peace-building and reconstruction at the community level in rural areas.

Activities

  • Promotion of women’s networking and participation in social, economic, and political life of their communities through the establishment of at least 8 Women’s Community Centers which will serve to create spaces for women and provide services that meet the specific needs of women while offering opportunities to build on their existing strengths.
  • Provide training and advocacy activities on community mobilization and awareness raising, psychological and legal services, socio-economic and political participation, as well as leadership development in socio-economic areas.

Beneficiaries
The project will specifically target IDP women returning to their place of origin as well as refugees returning from neighboring countries, since both groups face similar challenges on their return. However, to avoid creating gaps between local women and returnees, and to promote reconciliation and conflict resolution within the community at large, the project will have a wider application and will also target vulnerable groups of local women as well as men working in partnership with women.
