Land registration, land distribution and land management have always been one of the most pressing tasks for successive Afghan Governments. The land registration and allocation system in place remains complex with critical gaps for refugee returnees and the internally displaced.
As UN agencies along with international and national NGOs became increasingly involved in collaboration with the Government of Afghanistan to facilitate land management, the need for a coordination mechanism between key stakeholders becomes critical.
After several attempts since late 2008, UNHCR, NRC, UN-Habitat, USAID, DACAAR, UN-MACA, and Action Aid have since early 2010 regularly met to exchange information on projects and activities related to land, in order to better coordinate responses to land issues. This small task force is functioning under the Afghanistan Protection Cluster as a sub-cluster.
