Global Compact

(UN Agency)

(1) Overview of activities

The Global Compact is the UN's voluntary corporate citizenship initiative in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.  It revolves around 10 universal principles, derived from international instruments that already enjoy consensus.

Through the power of collective action, the Global Compact seeks to advance responsible corporate citizenship so that business in partnership with other social actors can help realise the Secretary-General's vision: a more sustainable and inclusive global economy.

(2) Contribution/Contact information

As a voluntary initiative, the Global Compact seeks wide participation from a diverse group of businesses and other organisations. To initiate participation, a company sends a letter from its Chief Executive Officer (endorsed by its Board) to the UN Secretary-General expressing support for the Global Compact and its principles, as well as the company's intention to work towards implementation of the principles within its business operations.

(3) Examples of Engagement with the private sector

Participating companies are encouraged to take part in the Compact's various means of business engagement - learning, dialogue, initiatives, projects and local networks.

The Global Compact has expanded rapidly since the launch of its operational phase in 2000.  Now nearly 2,000 companies from over 80 countries are participating in the initiative, as well as dozens of global labour and civil society organizations.  Participants are fairly evenly split between industrialized and developing countries.  More than 50 local networks have also been created around the world.
