(UN Agency)
(1) Overview of activities
UNHCR leads and co-ordinates international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country. Until a long-term solution is found, UNHCR provides material assistance to refugees, allowing them to rebuild their lives, continue their education, access healthcare, and receive water, food and shelter.
In five decades, the agency has helped an estimated 50 million people restart their lives. Today, a staff of more than 6,000 people in some 116 countries continues to help some 17 million persons. UNHCR has an annual budget of approximately US$ 1 billion. Learn more about UNHCR.
(2) Role in emergency relief and reconstruction
UNHCR is first on the ground to protect and assist those fleeing their homes to escape persecution and conflict in situations of man-made emergencies. Exceptionally, as in the case of the tsunami disaster, UNHCR has been asked by the Secretary General to contribute their expertise to provide immediate relief in situations of natural catastrophes. Everyday, UNHCR teams in the field are working to help millions of people rebuild their shattered lives.

(4) Contribution/Contact information
UNHCR accepts cash contributions from business on its website .
UNHCR works in partnership with a number of companies on an on-going basis to address the social challenges defined under the Millennium Development Goals. These comprehensive relationships are designed to achieve concrete results, utilise the skills and core competencies of the business, provide mutual benefit, and are particularly valued by the partner company for the positive effect on employee morale and pride. UNHCR also accepts contributions of in-kind goods or services deemed to meet the identified needs of refugees and the organisation. UNHCR seeks to establish partnerships well before an emergency to ensure the proper planning required for emergency situations. Typical in-kind contributions accepted by UNHCR are worth US$50,000 - US$1million.

(5) Examples of engagement with the private sector
Nestlé (Switzerland):
A collaborative partnership to provide safe and sustainable water sources to Somali refugees and the local population in the Jijiga region of Eastern Ethiopia. The project activities range from water trucking to populations not yet reached by piped water (with all necessary logistical arrangements and accompanying road improvements) to fine-tuning of a complex water supply system. Nestlé has funded these regional water activities, provided free access to technical laboratories for testing water quality and contributed employee know-how to this partnership.
Microsoft EMEA (France):
The partnership between Microsoft and UNHCR is based on a shared vision and specific goals, in particular, for:
(i) enhancing UNHCR’s technological capacity through sharing of knowledge and expertise between Microsoft employees and UNHCR’s IT team currently deploying a new refugee registration platform;
(ii) bringing the benefit of technology solutions to refugee communities to help improve their standard of living, education and job prospects; and
(iii) contributing to a better overall understanding of the refugee cause.
Nike EMEA (The Netherlands):
The partnership exists to address systemic barriers to empowerment faced by refugee girls. The objective is to build a partnership that reinforces and enhances sports as a tool to promote girls’ integration in education and allows them to take leadership roles to facilitate peace and stability in their communities. The project is being piloted in Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya.
