 United Nations Volunteer Programme Minimize

(UN Agency)

(1) Overview of activities

The UNV programme, administered by UNDP, supports sustainable human development globally through the promotion of volunteerism, including the mobilization of volunteers. Since the beginning of its operations in 1971, UNV has mobilized more than 30,000 UN Volunteers to serve the causes of peace and development. Every year, more than 5,000 UN Volunteers representing some 150 nationalities serve in more than 140 countries.

UNV also has a strong corporate volunteers programme dedicated to meeting the development needs in various countries through the approach of Corporate Social Responsibility. Since 2001, UNV has facilitated more than 100 missions of Corporate Volunteers in 40 countries; two of the most recent missions being in Indonesia and Sri Lanka in the area of post Tsunami recovery.

(2) Role in emergency relief and reconstruction

In addition to mobilizing volunteer resources for development, UNV’s work includes the promotion and mobilization of volunteer resources for different aspects of disaster management (preparation, relief, recovery, reconstruction, rehabilitation and prevention), and in the areas of humanitarian assistance, peacekeeping and electoral processes. All of UNV’s emergency response activities are channeled through UNV’s Special Operations section, to make our response more flexible, rapid and effective.
