> PricewaterhouseCoopers Helping the UN to achieve its Humanitarian Goals

PricewaterhouseCoopers became the largest corporate sponsor to the CERF in July 2008 with a contribution of US$500,000. It is part of a larger grant prompted by cyclone Nargis in Myanmar which led PwC to pledge US$ 1 million divided equally between the CERF and the Food and Agriculture Organization. PwC also contributed to the earthquake relief efforts for the people of China.  The firm donated US$250,000 to UNICEF to help provide emergency food and healthcare to children impacted by the earthquake. PricewaterhouseCoopers has collaborated with the United Nations for years, including contributing toward Indian Ocean tsunami relief efforts, membership in the UN Global Compact, and a significant commitment with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to help the refugees of Darfur.

“At PricewaterhouseCoopers, we have a strong commitment to community involvement worldwide, and believe that acting responsibly is a critical part of what it takes to be a leader,” said Michael Costello, PricewaterhouseCoopers Charitable Foundation President.

(Singapore and New York: 21 April 2006):  The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs participated in the launch of the DHL Disaster Response Team (DRT) in Singapore.  The DRT is a pool of some 80 DHL experts specially-trained to ensure that relief supplies reach people quickly and effectively in the case of a major natural disaster. Comprised of regular DHL employees who have volunteered to take part in the DRT’s humanitarian work, the team will aim to reduce bottlenecks at airports close to the scene of a major natural disaster by helping to organize the handling, warehousing and loading of relief supplies for onward transportation in an effective manner.  Each DRT will be deployable for a period of up to three weeks following a major natural disaster.

Singapore has been chosen as the site for the South Asia DRT due to its central location in the region and its excellent telecommunications and logistics infrastructure.  The next Disaster Response Team will be established in Miami.  It will cover the Latin America and Caribbean regions.  The Disaster Response Team's services are provided as an in-kind donation.  In addition to the existing work in the field of Disaster Response, the strategic partnership between DHL and the UN System will also cover other areas of disaster management such as disaster preparedness.
