21 April 2009: Between August and September 2008 the combined impact of the four successive hurricanes and tropical storms caused 793 deaths and injured 548 people. More than 165,000 families - 800,000 people - were affected across the county, especially in Artibonite, South and South-East regions. The disasters impacted nine out of ten regions of Haiti. Total losses and damages have been valued at 15 percent of GDP.
While the immediate emergency is finished, there remains a need to follow up on the most vulnerable cases. Mass displacements, destruction of property, loss of livelihoods and increased violence in the communities have added to the already existing vulnerabilities in the flood affected areas.
