CERF allocates $ 2.6 million for food insecure populations in Mozambique

11 January 2010: The lean season (hunger gap) in Mozambique begins in October and lasts until February. But due to delayed rains in many of the affected areas, this year the lean season is expected to extend into April. The lean season, particularly the month of February, will be a critical and difficult period of food security for people in Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Sofala, Manica, Tete, Zambezia and Nampula Provinces.
To ease this problem, CERF has allocated $2.6 million to humanitarian agencies in Mozambique. The World Food Programme (WFP) has been allocated $2 million for emergency food assistance for 175,000 highly food insecure people. $423,000 has gone to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for agricultural inputs support for 5,000 vulnerable smallholder farmers. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) will use $200,000 for nutrition support for approximately 32,000 under-five children in affected areas.
