1 May 2009: Military operations and insecurity in northwest Pakistan have caused significant internal displacement since August 2008. According to the Ministry for Social Welfare and Women’s Development for Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province, hundreds of thousands internally displaced persons (IDPs) are spread across host communities, staying in rented accommodation or with friends and extended family in the Peshawar area. It is estimated that nearly half of the IDPs are women, and another twenty percent are children under five years old.

Together with Government authorities, United Nations humanitarian agencies in Pakistan are working to provide the affected families with basic necessities, including food and nutrition assistance, shelter, water, sanitation facilities, primary healthcare and education.

Therefore, some $2.8 million will go to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) so that it can bring full food rations for the displaced for one month.  Another $2.15 million will bolster the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) efforts to provide household items such as blankets and cooking utensils to people living in camps.  As local health services are increasingly overstretched, some $3.4 million will go towards United Nations efforts to provide emergency healthcare, safe water and hygiene to the families who have been displaced. The World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN Habitat) will use $514,000, $854,000, and $300, 000 respectively to carry out WASH Interventions while WHO, UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will use $460,000, $200,000 and $201,000 respectively for emergency health interventions.

UNICEF and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and will support on-going primary education services, using CERF funds of $242,000 and $75,000 respectively.  UNICEF will also use $94,000 to protect internally displaced children from the consequences of the armed conflict.  Some $495,000 was provided to UN Habitat for providing emergency shelter for IDPs and the families that host them.

Close to $1 million was allocated to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to ensure the security and safety of humanitarian assistance to IDPs.
