  • The Republic of Congo ranks 139 out of 177 countries in the Human Development Report 2007/2008.
  • The Congo hosts more than 63,000 refugees, mainly from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Angola
  • Less than half the population has access to clean water, exacerbating the incidence of waterborne and gastro-intestinal diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera
   CERF Response - Underfunded Emergencies

25 March 2008: The Republic of Congo has known numerous conflicts that have weakened various sectors.  Because the Republic of Congo is an oil-producing country, several donors refrain from financing humanitarian actions.  Despite being an oil-producing country, poverty still touches a large portion of the population.

In 2008, more than 70 percent live under the poverty line.  In response to this problem, CERF allocated $4.3 million through its first-round underfunded emergencies window to the sectors of food security, health, water and sanitation, and protection.
