16 December 2009: CERF has allocated over $8 million to humanitarian agencies working to assist Congolese civilians leaving the Equateur province in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  Refugees are crossing the Oubangui River into the Republic of Congo due to conflict between Enyele and Munzaya ethnic groups.  United Nations agencies estimate that there are currently over 78,000 Congolese refugees in the Republic of Congo, with numbers increasing.

Of the $8 million CERF allocation, the World Food Program (WFP) will use over $3 million to provide food assistance and common logistics support.  The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will use over $2.6 million to provide multi-sectoral assistance, including provision of non-food items, drugs and protection.  In addition to the protection work of UNHCR, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will use over $225,000 to provide protection for vulnerable populations.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has been allocated over $560,000 to provide seeds, tools and fisheries supplies.  $134,000 will be used by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and UNICEF to provide education programs.  Medical assistance, $538,000, will be provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNFPA and UNICEF.   Finally, UNICEF and WHO will spend $714,000 on water and sanitation.
