27 October 2010: CERF allocates over $1.6 million to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for life-saving flood response in North Sudan. Over two million flood-affected will be provided with a safe water supply and some 300,000 individuals will benefit from emergency health interventions.
Heavy rains and floods have been affecting major parts of Sudan; at least 11,000 houses have been totally destroyed, while 5,000 have been partially destroyed. In the worst-affected states, the heavy rains have resulted in water and sanitation infrastructure damage in a number of internally displaced people’s (IDP) camps, exacerbating an already critical situation. This damage has led to the flooding of latrines and the contamination of wells, raising concerns of morbidity and mortality from communicable diseases.
Diarrhoea and malaria have been showing an upward trend over the past weeks, due in part to a sharp rise in mosquito breeding sites in flood-affected states. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 100,000 people are directly affected and 300,000 are at risk of public health concerns if no immediate action is taken to prevent disease outbreaks.

2 July 2010: Some $9.2 million has been allocated to the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide food assistance for 4 million beneficiaries in the north and for up to 600,000 people in the south. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will receive $6.1 million to support the nutrition pipeline that will benefit 35,000 severely malnourished children and the health pipeline for infants and women of child bearing age, to improve the Water and Sanitation pipeline for 200,000 vulnerable people in the south, and to procure, provide, and distribute Non-food items for 5,500 families. Some $3.5 million will go to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for support for 228,000 most at-risk people. Close to $2.7 million has been allocated to the International Organization of Migration (IOM) for emergency provision of Non-food items and shelters for 125,000 people. Finally, the World Health Organization (WHO) will use $1.2 million to strengthen epidemic and emergency preparedness and response capacity for 1.2 million children, 900,000 women, and 180,000 IDPs.
In Darfur, more than 2 million people – a third of the region’s population – are displaced and reliant on aid agencies for their survival. Another 1 million Darfurians remain in villages but face continuous threats as the conflict continues. The food security status of the population remains precarious with disrupted livelihoods and limited opportunities. While the Government is keen to promote the return or resettlement of those displaced by conflict, prospects for lasting peace and security – a precondition for voluntary returns on any significant scale – remain remote in the short to medium-term.
While the situation has been more stabilized throughout Darfur compared to previous years, banditry and lawlessness is still a problem, and targeted incidents against humanitarian workers remain a real concern.
