Edward Lomude used to be a happy boy who played football with his classmates and collected wild fruits in the forest with his friends in Morsak, a village in South Sudan. Then, in May 2007, he was abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), a rebel group operating mainly in northern Uganda and known for its gruesome abuses against civilians. Later rescued by hunters, Edward was able to return to his village but the looting and destruction inflicted by LRA forced his family to move to another village and start from scratch.

This is Dieuconsole. He arrived at the health centre of Ndjomgobe in CAR three years ago weighing only 2.5 kg. Dieuconsole was part of the international NGO IPHD/UNICEF community-based nutrition programme monitoring growth. Every week he and 684 children - as well as 290 children with a severe or moderate loss of weight - received the recommended rations of Plumpy nut in the sub-district of Bossangoa.

The TearFund, in partnership with UNICEF, used CERF funding to start water and sanitation activities in Sinoe County in southeast Liberia. Because of its relative remoteness and inaccessibility, the county has received little humanitarian assistance.
