Rebuilding Communities in Post-Conflict Liberia - Empowerment for Change

Objective
Addressing a wide range of human security needs, the project focuses on the following objectives:

(i) Enable targeted communities to participate in identifying and determining their needs; articulating and negotiating with partners; and participating in the monitoring and realization of such needs.
(ii) Replenish farming skills and technical support services lost during the conflict in the targeted communities.
(iii) Support the revitalization of local economies by creating on-farm and off-farm opportunities for gainful employment.
(iv) Enhance access to basic social services including education, health and water and sanitation.

Beneficiaries
Through a community-based multi-sectoral approach, the project enhances the capacity of postconflict rural communities to protect themselves from the risks of relapsing into conflict and empowers them to consolidate and sustain the recovery towards peace and development.

Activities

• Facilitate the participation of community members in the formulation and the administration of community rehabilitation projects;
• Develop management skills of community members for effective and efficient assets storage, local marketing and information processing;
• Support the establishment of systems and institutions such as credit schemes to improve the development and marketing of agricultural products;
• Enhance blacksmith skills through delivery of training programs and rehabilitation of blacksmith centres;
• Improve farming techniques such as crop production and the use of fertilizers;
• Rehabilitate basic infrastructure such as roads, bridges and canals through local contractors with visible multiplier effects;
• Distribute seeds and other related farming inputs;
• Rehabilitate schools, clinics, and water and sanitation facilities through local contractors.
