"Seth Koma" - Survival and Development of Children in Rural Cambodia

Objective
Seth Koma means “Child Rights” in Khmer. The aim of this programme is thus to protect the rights of children and women and improve their lives through community action in Cambodia. More specifically, this project will help strengthen community-driven initiatives to improve health, nutrition, education, water and sanitation services, while also opening new economic opportunities for vulnerable households and communities, as well as providing preventive and psycho-social care.
Beneficiaries
This program focuses is on children, mainly those under five years of age, and women of reproductive age, with special attention paid to vulnerable families, children in need of special protection and people living with HIV/AIDS. As part of training and advocacy activities, other beneficiaries will include local and central government officials and their counterparts.
Activities

Support in the development of community-driven village action plans focusing on challenges facing women and children and determination of best activities to address them.

Health, hygiene and nutrition education activities organized at the community level, combined with functional literacy classes targeted towards out-of-school children, youths and women.

Support to water and sanitation efforts including construction of wells and provision of water use training.

Community awareness-raising on domestic violence, behavior change toward children and child care.
Outputs (including distinctive aspects of the project)

Training modules on child rights, health, education and protection benefiting local commune council members in 130 communes.

Establishment of 130 Commune Committee for Women and Children, and members trained on social, women and children issues.

Water and environmental sanitation upgraded through construction of wells, school latrines, water-quality testing benefiting a cumulative total of over 4000 families and over 10,000 primary school children.

42,000 people reached by advocacy efforts on health promotion, women and children’s rights.

Training of trainers and awareness-raising on domestic violence, reaching 29,000 people at the village and commune level.

598 community pre-school classes supported with over 12,000 children enrolled.
