Introduction to Early Recovery Sector Working Group Minimize

The Early Recovery Sector in Kenya is co-chaired by the GOK MoSSP and UNDP.  Early recovery is an approach that seeks to turn the dividends of humanitarian action into sustainable crisis recovery and development opportunities.  As such, it is an approach that is advocated for in all sectors to promote an approach where relief is complemented by actions that mitigate further threats to people affected by crises, and assist people affected by a crisis to return to their normal way of life at the earliest opportunity.

In addition to this cross-cutting approach, a space has been created for a stand-alone ‘Early Recovery’ sector.  This stand alone sector prioritises (1) Disaster risk Reduction (DRR) including climate change, and (2) supports livelihoods opportunities for crisis-affected people;  (3) helps host communities in areas of high displacement, (4) and mitigates conflict to help provide a stable environment.

The work of the Early Recovery Working Group (ER WKG) is based on majority decision-making by the members of the group.  The role of the co-chairs is to advocate for early recovery to be integrated broadly in humanitarian action, and to coordinate the activities of the ER WKG.
