A Pastoral Policy Framework for Africa Minimize

Panorama pastoralist.gif

Introduction

The Pastoral Policy Framework is an African Union (AU) initiative led by its Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture (DREA). The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is accompanying the process by facilitating information flow between the major parties in the policy process: pastoralists, African Union (AU), Regional Economic Communities (RECs: COMESA, ECOWAS, UMA, SADC and ECAS), international agencies and the media. UNOCHA’s accompanyment is intended to support pastoralists in particular to take an active part in the consultations, including articulating their issues and holding the process to account

'A Policy Framework on Pastoralism for Africa should be about engagement with pastoralists. For millions of Africans, the animal is the center. Every other aspect of their lives flow from that. That should be the beginning in understanding any policy process on pastoralism.’
