The mission of the Pandemic Influenza Contingency (PIC) Unit is to promote the readiness of the UN System, national governments and the humanitarian community on the influenza pandemic.
The Pandemic Influenza Contingency Unit (PIC) organized and held several national activities to brief partners on the global Avian Influenza situation and to better understand countries needs, opportunities and challenges in the area of preparedness; to identify areas of future collaboration; to hold simulation exercises; and to socialize contingency plan methodologies for Avian and Human Influenza.
The Pandemic Influenza Contingency team plan for 2009 was concentrated on raising awareness of the threat of pandemic influenza, promoting preparedness and readiness, and guiding plans on non-health aspects.
Following the initial months of the pandemic, the need for some countries to have more substantial assistance in preparedness was identified. The resulting process – Urgent Needs Identification Process (UNIP) – identified six countries[1] in the LAC region for the process. A further three countries also provided inputs and are now included in the process. [2]
