THE REGIONAL CONTEXT

In the first quarter of 2011, four of the 32 global natural disasters occurred in Latin America and the Caribbean.  These four events affected some 318,000 people and generated economic losses of at least USD $500 million.

OCHA IN THE REGION

The OCHA Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (ROLAC) covers 35 countries and 23 territories, with field offices in Colombia and Haiti.

COORDINATION TOOL

A major challenge for ROLAC in 2010 was the coordination of the continuing growth in the number of humanitarian actors. Other challenges included maintaining and strengthening national capacity and addressing the budgetary constraints within OCHA and the humanitarian community.
