The ocha.kz is an information exchange platform located in the OCHA office in Almaty. It provides Central Asia humanitarian stakeholders with the following capabilities:
- to access up-to-date information and training material on disaster preparedness and response Central Asia
- to exchange files confidentially with others members of the Central Asia platform
- to consult the contact details of all OCHA partners in Central Asia.
- to schedule meetings and events
- to dialog within discussion forums (e.g. about the indicators)
- to discuss humanitarian scenarios.
Earthquake in Tajikistan, 2 January 2010
An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale shook the Central Asian country of Tajikistan on January 2, 2010, affecting some 20 villages in two Jamoats of the Vanj district in Gorno Badakhshan. With the support of the Norwegian government, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has been able to supply the last outstanding humanitarian goods needed in response to the earthquake in Vanj. A flight carrying 100 winter tents, stoves and 600 quilted blankets arrived in Dushanbe today. The relief items are expected to reach the affected area by 14 January.

Kyrgyzstan Humanitarian Flash Appeal 2008-2009

Despite the best efforts of the government and a relatively mild winter, vulnerable individuals and critical social infrastructure in Kyrgyzstan remain under severe stress from continued power cuts during the cold season and a precarious food security environment. In December 2008, concerned over the results of a series of needs assessments and the deteriorating energy and economic environment in Kyrgyzstan, the United Nations and its partners issued a Humanitarian Flash Appeal for US$21 million to fund a prioritized set of interventions to support critical facilities and to meet the basic humanitarian needs of the 800,000 most vulnerable people in the country for a six month period.

Tajikistan Flash Appeal 2008
Abnormally cold weather conditions in Tajikistan, causing heavy snowfall and frozen rivers, have damaged water and electrical supply systems and isolated mountain villages. Snowfall in December 2007 was 245% above the historical average for the month.
