Humanitarian Response Activities:
The country continues to strengthen its disaster preparedness and response capabilities by ensuring that it has a comprehensive Contingency Plan to deal with natural disasters. In late 2007, the Government and its partners developed a contingency plan, which guided the humanitarian response to the cyclones in the first quarter of 2008.
To ensure effective coordination, the Government’s disaster management authority – the Bureau National de Gestion des Risques et des Catastrophes (BNGRC), in cooperation with the international community, merged its sectorial committees with the international humanitarian community’s clusters to form Government-led sector working groups.
During the emergency response in 2008, the United Nations and its partners developed a Flash Appeal seeking US$36 million (including CERF commitments of US$4.62 million), to provide immediate assistance to more than 239,000 people in key areas such as agriculture, early recovery, education, nutrition food security, health, protection as well as water and sanitation.
