Overview:
Zimbabwe has reported more than 90,000 cases of cholera, claiming the lives of more than 4,000 people since August 2008. At present, cholera has now spread to nine countries in the region. These include: Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Investigation is ongoing to verify the causes of the outbreak in the different countries. Poor water and sanitation, especially in remote areas, are a contributing factor, in particular in Zimbabwe. The United Nations and humanitarian partners are concerned that the situation could deteriorate further, amidst the current rainy season. The UN and its partners are supporting governments respond to the situation. For more details refer to the Regional Cholera Upates.
