Putting Protection into Practice: Refugees, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Migrants:  9-10 July 2008, Johannesburg, South Africa. 

Background

The workshop focused on the human rights guidelines and legal frameworks available to assist humanitarian workers respond to the needs of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) as a result of natural disasters. In addition, it also also focused on the migratory flows and displacement challenges faced in the region.

More than 50 participants attended from the region, including UN Agencies, NGOs, the Red Cross Movement and Government representatives from Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa.

The workshop methodology covered the broad spectrum of legal and operational responses to displacement with a particular focus on existing instruments and tools, such as the Operational Guidelines on Human Rights and Natural Disasters.
