The protection of civilians in the Afgooye corridor is a priority
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the Somali National Army started an offensive into the Afgooye corridor on 22 May. AMISOM issued a press release assuring that the forces were taking every precaution to prevent harm or injury to civilians.  The Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Mark Bowden, appealed to all parties to minimise the impact of conflict to civilians and allow full humanitarian access to people in need.
